St. Lucie County Inquiry:

Q.Found an old family letter written to my grand parents back in 1897.  It was from a friend who was recuperating from an unknown illness down in White City, FL.  It also referred to visiting one of the grand parent's sister-in-law down there.

Our family is just curious about White City, since none of us ever heard of it and didn't know of any relatives in that area. Anything you can tell us about the area back then would be appreciated. Thanks,
A.White City is an approximately 7 square mile unincorporated community in St. Lucie County with a population of around 4,000. The community located between Ft. Pierce and Port St Lucie is near the midway point of Florida's east coast. Early in the 1890s a group of Midwestern Danish organized and decided to colonize in Florida. Many of the early Danes who planned this small Scandinavian community, had attended the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. They were impressed with Great White City of Daniel Burnham they named their little colony "White City." They also named the road that ran through the center of town "Midway" after the new entertainment attraction.

The winter of 1894-95 almost wiped out many farmers and growers, but White City eventually emerged as a thriving community. The original White City Improvement Club was located in the old recreation center on Midway Road just east of the St. Lucie River. Both the Danes and the non-Scandinavian residents of White City attended or belonged to the White City Improvement Club. Drinking, schottische dancing and other entertainment at the Club kept the community fairly tightknit in their early Florida years.
Q.What is the name and phone number for the obituary desk at the most prominent newspaper in Port St. Lucie ?
A.The main number of the Port St. Lucie News is 772.337.5800. The Fort Pierce/Port St. Lucie Tribune is 772.461.2050. The Vero Beach Press Journal also handles St. Lucie County obituaries at 772.466.2121.
